Welcome to A Moment in Proverbs, a daily devotional written by my precious mother who has a heart for young moms. I hope you will be encouraged by this post. Feel free to leave a comment before you leave. She loves hearing from you all!
There is lasting value in righteous living. Our sure reward is eternal through the LORD’s graciousness, justice and faithfulness to His people who walk after His calling. His rewards to us are unmerited; for we deserve nothing but have been given life and life abundantly.
The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. (See Proverbs 11:18; Psalms 103:8-17; Ephesians 2:8-10 and Romans 4:4-5)
Our sure reward is a promise as it was to Israel if we are obedient and walk in righteousness. As we obey, we are strengthened through His grace; an example of His sure reward. (See Deuteronomy 28:1-2; 2 Corinthians 12:9; and Ephesians 4:7)
When we live for ourselves and reject the gift of life, our work is deceitful work. All of our efforts are in vain and are sure to fail with the storms of life. But when we seek after righteous living our foundation is sure and the work is rewarded with promises of God. Our lives produce the fruit of the Spirit and our reward is found in Christ. We develop Christ-like qualities in our lives and these become our eternal reward even while we travel through this life.(See Galatians 5:22-23; 6:8; and John 15:8)
Let us say as Paul said, “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (See 2 Timothy 4:6-8)
- Have you stored up treasures for this life or for eternity?
- Finish this sentence: My sure reward is….
Prayer: Father, we can rejoice and be exceedingly glad for our reward is in you! You have been our “rewarder” and in you there is no shortcoming for your people. We can trust that your promises are true and that we will receive a sure reward for eternity if we have received your son as our recompense for sin. LORD, turn our hearts and hands to the work you have set before us. Thank you for the rewards of your grace, mercy and everlasting love. In Jesus’ name we pray and offer our praise, amen.
