Moments of sharing in Proverbs as we seek for Wisdom

Refreshment For Our Soul

All of us experience exhaustion at some point in our lives. Days when we’ve given our very best, yet all we have to show for it is mental, physical, and spiritual exhaustion. I’m in trouble when I am living in a state of exhaustion instead of experiencing refreshment for my soul. Even when I am unaware, my soul is continually searching for refreshment. I’m desperate for a refreshment that is of substance, not just something that tickles my ears or fills my belly with air. God has created each of us with a need for refreshment that can only come from Him.

Refreshment For Our Soul

Friends, we are often caught up in the world’s concept of refreshment for our souls, but I rejoice that my soul finds refreshment in Christ, our sound wisdom, not in the matters or people of this world!  Think how disappointing mirages are to the weary traveler; seeing in a distance a lake spanning before them, pressing forward yet never arriving at the promise of the refreshment.  This World is a mirage in the matter of wisdom; it cannot offer us the refreshment our soul’s desire. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

Proverbs 3:21-22 My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.

Refreshment

Common sense and discernment will refresh our soul if we keep our eyes upon the Word of God.  When we seek His wisdom we will have the sound wisdom and discretion we need to endure, prevail and succeed in this life.  The work of our hands will be done unto the LORD, and we will not be found thirsty or without those things we need to bring God Glory!  God’s Word will be life to our soul; it will see us through the work He has given us, it will revive us when we are in trouble, it will be spiritual life pointing us to eternity. The LORD will be our confidence!

Proverbs 3:23-26 Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2001). (Pr 3:23–26). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

When we are refreshed by this wisdom, we are strengthened and satisfied. Our work will be that of peace and living in righteousness will bring us eternal assurance.  God’s Word brings us into a right relationship with Him because we are abiding with Him.  Wisdom does not allow us to stray from His side; it ever guards our hearts and draws us closer still…truly our souls will find fulfillment, satisfaction, and refreshment.  John 7:37-39

Isaiah 32:17-18 And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2001). (Is 32:17–18). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

John 7:37-39  On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Spiritual Refreshment

God protects those who live according to His Word.  That protection is His grace which keeps us from running headlong into sin and its destruction. Wisdom, found in God’s Word, directs us, keeps us and saves us. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 3:16-17  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Psalms 23:1-6

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

A Moment in Proverbs ~ Guarding Our Mouth

We’ve all heard the wise words of Solomon and James related to the tongue and its ability to speak life or death, but we can never receive too much teaching when it comes to this small rudder of our heart’s intent.  Our tongue is a weapon that can be fashioned against us and against those it speaks to; there seems to be no end to the damage an uncontrolled tongue can do. Proverbs 13:3 tells us that those who can keep watch over their mouth keep their life; while those who give no rule to their lips shall have destruction. (See Proverbs 17:19-20; 18:21; 21:23; and James 3:6)

In Proverbs 3 we read that there are seven things God hates; Read more

Loving wisdom and getting understanding is repeated often throughout Proverbs.  Today’s passage in Chapter 19:8 tells us that “he that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul; he that keepeth understanding shall find good.”

While studying my “Life Application” Bible, there were some very good points made about successful living in God’s Word. Successful living is not about being rich, Read more

A Moment in Proverbs ~ Tree of Life

Welcome to A Moment in Proverbs, a daily devotional written by my precious mother who has a heart for young moms. I hope you will be encouraged by this post. Feel free to leave a comment before you leave. She loves hearing from you all!

Our life is linked by our relationship with God and it is our Tree of life.  Wisdom brings us our relationship when we abide as God directs us (John 15:1-11).  Chapter 13 speaks of the tree of life but so do other chapters through Proverbs and they all relate to our relationship and being guided by wisdom  (See Proverbs 3:18; 11:30; 13:12; and 15:4).

Blessings follow those who seek wisdom, the righteous are as trees of life; their fruit is precious and useful and will nourish others. Wisdom is a tree of knowledge, not common knowledge, but that holy knowledge of a loving God who brings them life eternal.

In Proverbs 13:12, we are told that when we have received those things we desire it is as a tree of life Read more

A Moment in Proverbs ~ A Fortress Under Attack

Welcome to A Moment in Proverbs, a daily devotional written by my precious mother who has a heart for young moms. I hope you will be encouraged by this post. Feel free to leave a comment before you leave. She loves hearing from you all!

Proverbs 4:23 “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

I read a book several years ago by John Flavel (Keeping the Heart – written in 1660) and he commented on this very passage; “We are to guard our heart as if it was a fortress under attack, for, indeed, it is.  How diligently a man will guard his fortune and his home, which are of temporal value; but how carelessly do most men guard that which is of eternal value, their very soul!”

There are many areas of our lives that are under attack, if we have not prepared our hearts for the battle, we will surely find the struggle against the foe overwhelming.

Our preparation for our daily battles should start with a prayer; perhaps this one from Psalms 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:  And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

One of my favorite scriptures to remind myself of the unseen battle we face daily was written by Paul as he wrote Ephesians 6:10-18 and encourages us to put on the whole armor of God.

When we prepare our hearts with God’s Word, we have just been covered by the power that lies within the pages and we will be equipped to face the day with confidence that if God is for us then who can be against us? The LORD is our light and our salvation; whom shall we fear; the LORD is the strength of our life; of whom shall we be afraid?

Prayer:  Precious Father, we open our hearts and minds to you this day to prepare us for those lessons you desire for us to learn. Lord, show us how we can keep our hearts guarded against the enemy. Teach us your truth and equip us with wisdom to face each challenge.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

A Moment in Proverbs ~ Righteousness vs. Wickedness

Welcome to A Moment in Proverbs, a daily devotional written by my precious mother who has a heart for young moms. I hope you will be encouraged by this post. Feel free to leave a comment before you leave. She loves hearing from you all!

Proverbs 11:3-8, “The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivers from death. The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness. When a wicked man dies, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth. The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.”

Righteousness vs. wickedness; these are opposites but often we have clouded vision of right from wrong.  Why?  We’re often swept up in a story of someone justifying why they acted in such a manner that brought harm to others. And we overlook their unrighteous acts because we’ve labeled them as having unfortunate circumstances or that the world owes them a break.  But friends, the integrity of the upright shall guide those who wish to walk in righteousness.  Those who choose the path of destruction will find destruction.  There are several comparisons in this passage today, let’s look at them:

Righteousness

Scripture

Wickedness

Integrity: will guide us Psalms 25:21 Perverseness: will destroy us
delivered from death Psalms 110:1-7 No profit in the day of wrath
Ways directed Psalms 23:2-3 Falling by their own schemes
Daily deliverance 2 Samuel 22:48-50 Captured by their deeds
Delivered out of trouble Psalms 34:16-18 Hopes and life perish

All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God, but it is our duty that once we have received Christ, we must turn away from unrighteous deeds (see Romans 3:21-24 & 1John 8-10).

Prayer:  Father, take our hearts, minds and hands and wash them clean before you.  LORD, restore in us righteous living because you live in us.  Thank you for the wisdom of your word and the great harvest it has in store for those will apply it to their lives.  LORD, for those who have been undecided to follow after you, let them look at your word tonight and make a decision to follow Christ.  We thank you for those who know you and for those who will come to you.  LORD, we praise your name.  In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

A Moment in Proverbs ~ First Hope of Light

Welcome to A Moment in Proverbs, a daily devotional written by my precious mother who has a heart for young moms. I hope you will be encouraged by this post. Feel free to leave a comment before you leave. She loves hearing from you all!

Proverbs 4:18-19, “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.”

When was the last time you stayed up all night and waited for the morning?  Do you remember the first break of light across the sky as it continued to build into full light of day?  This is likened unto those who walk in righteousness.  We come from the darkness that the entire world is engulfed in and when we turn from that darkness, we are like the breaking of the first gleam of light.  As we continue in the new walk, the light grows more and more until our light shines as the fullness of day.  Jesus tells us we are the light of the world when we have come away from our dark tomb and we are like a city upon a hill that shines through the night to the weary traveler.  Our light cannot be hidden, because darkness must give way to the light, no matter how tiny that light, once ignited, it cannot be hidden (See Matthew 5:14-16).

first hope of light

Christ is our first hope of light; for in him is no darkness; and we who follow will not walk in darkness, we will not grope through this life as those who do not have Him as their hope and life.  We are to walk as children of light, the reflection of Christ (see John 8:12 and Ephesians 5:8-14).

In contrast, those who walk in darkness are like those lost in a deep cave that has no opening to the outside, its cavern of darkness only goes deeper into the bowels of the earth where no light shines.  They are lost in total darkness, they have no idea where they are going, no purpose for their journey and they cannot even see what they are stumbling over. They are lost, they cannot see their next step or the hope for rising to the surface where light lives until God sends the candle which lives in you and I.  God does not desire that man walk in darkness and He offers each man an opportunity to come away from their blindness and find Jesus who says in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

Prayer:  LORD, the fruit of the Spirit directs us in all goodness and righteousness and truth; and through the spirit, we are convinced of righteous living.  The spirit proves what is acceptable unto the LORD. Father, show us how we can be your messengers of Light to this World; teach us to not hide our candle under the bushes of pride, embarrassment or selfishness.  LORD, create in us the desire to share the light that lives with us with all whom we pass along this life journey.  In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

A Moment in Proverbs ~ Giving

Welcome to A Moment in Proverbs, a daily devotional written by my precious mother who has a heart for young moms. I hope you will be encouraged by this post. Feel free to leave a comment before you leave. She loves hearing from you all!

Proverbs 11:24, “There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.”

Give and have more, be selfish and lose everything; consider God’s law of giving.  We might ask ourselves why is it important to give; the obvious answer would be, “so others will have.”  But that’s not the reason for giving. It is important to give, because God calls us to give.  We are to sow seeds, as that of the farmer, so that our fruits are increased, not only for our self but for those who are in need of a portion of the harvest (2 Corinthians 9:5-11).  Remember, God encouraged His people to leave the corners of the field for the widows and orphans, the poor and the stranger; even though the seed was sown for the harvest, there was to be a portion given to others (Leviticus 19:8-10 & Leviticus 23:22).

We are told in the New Testament (Luke6:38), “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”

giving

Those who are not willing to give will find their spiritual storehouses given to ruin.  What good does it do a man to hold back in giving when he has been liberally given?  When we ignore those in need, we are saying no to Christ.  When we give, we are giving to the LORD; “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me (Matthew 25:40).

Prayer: LORD, teach us to cast our bread upon the waters for it profit us nothing if we do not invest in your kingdom. LORD, teach us to give what we have for we do not know what tomorrow brings. LORD, teach us to do your work and trust in your rewards.  LORD, teach our heart to see the needs of others and to give as you call us to give.  LORD, we cannot out give your mercies, we cannot out give your riches; for everything we have has come from your hand.  LORD, teach us to give with a heart of humility and a heart of joy, for you love a cheerful giver.  In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
